Amino acids are the basic structure of protein macromolecules and are related to animal life activities. They play a crucial role in nutrition and health fields such as feed, food, medicine, culture media, and health products. With the rapid development of the global economy, especially in developed countries and other more developed economies, people pay more attention to nutritional intake and pursue a healthier and higher quality of life. The world amino acid industry has grown rapidly, and the application of amino acids continues to expand. In the future, with the increasing public awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, the continuous expansion of amino acid application fields, and the accelerated development of various amino acid application fields, the global demand for amino acids will further rise. According to data from CICC Enterprise Trust, the global production of amino acids exceeded 10 million tons in 2021 and is expected to maintain an average annual compound growth rate of 4.7% from 2022 to 2027. The production scale is expected to reach 13.8 million tons in 2027.

The demand for amino acids in the fields of medicine, food, and nutritional supplements is constantly increasing, and the global amino acid market size will also show a rapid growth trend. According to data from CICC Enterprise Trust, the global amino acid market reached 26.19 billion US dollars in 2021 and is expected to maintain an average annual compound growth rate of 7.5% from 2022 to 2030. By 2030, the global amino acid market is expected to reach 49.42 billion US dollars.

Throughout the years, China's amino acid production has dominated the market share of mid to low end amino acid products due to its advantages in raw material and labor costs. However, due to various reasons such as technology, processes, and quality management, there is relatively little participation in the market of mid to high end amino acid products, and there is a certain gap between China and global leading enterprises. In recent years, with the support of multiple important industrial policies introduced by the country, the industry has developed rapidly, and amino acid products have been continuously enriched and improved in quality. It has gradually entered small varieties of amino acids with high added value, such as phenylalanine, proline, isoleucine, valine, etc., and its market performance has gradually improved both domestically and internationally. In the future, with the improvement of the quality of life of urban and rural residents, the consumption concept of health as the main focus will be deeply rooted in people's hearts. At the same time, the biosynthesis process, fermentation process, and extraction technology of amino acids will be further optimized, and amino acids and their derivative products will have broad development space.

2. The correlation between this industry and upstream and downstream industries

(1) Upstream amino acid industry

Since the early 20th century, there have been four main methods for industrial production of amino acids: protein hydrolysis, chemical synthesis, microbial fermentation, and enzyme catalysis. Fermentation and enzyme catalysis methods are widely used due to their economic feasibility and ecological advantages. Therefore, currently, the raw materials for producing amino acids are mainly extracted from grain products, such as glucose extracted from corn starch as a carbon source, supplemented with various inorganic salts and nitrogen sources, and metabolized by production strains to obtain the desired products, which are then purified, dried, and packaged. Based on this, the current amino acid raw materials are mainly agricultural products such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, which belong to bulk commodities with serious homogenization and sufficient supply. In addition, in terms of energy supply, steam and electricity are mainly used. In the future, with the continuous advancement of extraction technology, the industry's raw materials will become increasingly abundant.

(2) Downstream of the amino acid industry

Amino acids, as human nutritional additives, seasonings, feed nutritional additives, pharmaceutical raw materials, etc., have a wide range of applications in the food industry, agriculture, animal husbandry, and human health care. There are many types of amino acids in China, with the main ones being isoleucine, leucine, valine, glutamic acid, lysine, threonine, methionine, and tryptophan. Among them, amino acids have different specific functions and application fields.

At present, a large amount of amino acids produced domestically are mainly used for food and animal feed, and are also widely used in cosmetics, fine chemical synthesis, and other fields. Compared to other industries, the production of medicinal amino acids is relatively small. However, medicinal amino acids play a crucial role in disease prevention, treatment, healthcare, and other aspects. On the one hand, they are important basic raw materials for the synthesis of antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs, respiratory system drugs, and small molecule peptide drugs; On the other hand, amino acid infusion preparations can be made to enhance the body's defense ability and help the body recover quickly. In addition, China has a large population base, and the aging of the population continues to intensify. The future development potential of amino acids in the pharmaceutical field is huge.
